INDICATE signs agreement with Flower Labs for federated learning technology, supporting the implementation of federated learning capabilities within the European federated data infrastructure being developed for intensive care research. The agreement provides INDICATE with access to Flower’s federated learning technology and technical expertise. The Flower framework will be implemented within the INDICATE platform to enable researchers to develop and train artificial intelligence (AI) models across participating hospitals while keeping sensitive patient data within the originating institutions.
The agreement follows discussions held during the INDICATE Consortium Meeting in Rome, from 14 to 16 September 2026. During the meeting, Dr. Chong Shen Ng of Flower Labs presented the Flower framework and demonstrated how federated learning can support collaborative AI development without centralising patient data.
This approach aligns with one of INDICATE’s guiding principles: “Data stays. Insights travel.”
The implementation of federated learning technology represents an important step in moving from infrastructure design towards operational deployment. By incorporating federated learning capabilities into the platform, INDICATE aims to support scalable and privacy-preserving AI research across intensive care units throughout Europe.
Looking ahead
The agreement with Flower Labs supports INDICATE’s broader objective of building a sustainable European infrastructure for responsible health data use, international research collaboration and improved patient care.
