On the third day of the ESICM Congress in Portugal, Maarten Ligtenberg presented on behalf of the Training and Education Workgroup of INDICATE, a research poster on the assessment framework that will support the effective and secure adoption of the INDICATE federated data infrastructure.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and federated data infrastructures offer important opportunities to improve intensive care research and clinical practice. However, successful implementation requires more than technological innovation. Healthcare professionals need the right knowledge and skills, while healthcare organisations must be prepared to support responsible and sustainable adoption.

The INDICATE project addresses these challenges by combining education, practical competencies and organisational readiness.

Assessing readiness for AI in intensive care
The poster, titled “A Multi-Dimensional Assessment Framework for Evaluating AI and Federated Data Training in Intensive Care: The INDICATE Study”, introduces an evaluation framework designed to assess the impact of INDICATE’s educational activities.

The framework goes beyond traditional knowledge assessments by examining multiple dimensions, including AI literacy, applied competencies, behavioural intentions, implementation barriers and institutional readiness.

From AI awareness to practical implementation
The initial findings demonstrate the importance of educational programmes that address not only theoretical knowledge but also practical application and organisational challenges. Knowledge gaps were identified in areas such as model drift, semantic accuracy, data-sharing agreements and the limitations of common data models.

The pilot supports the feasibility of INDICATE’s multidimensional evaluation framework and helps identify priority topics for future educational activities.

By assessing knowledge, competencies and implementation readiness over time, INDICATE aims to better understand how targeted education can support the responsible adoption of AI and federated data approaches in intensive care.

Strengthening European collaboration
Presenting these findings at the ESICM Congress provided an opportunity to share INDICATE’s educational approach with the international intensive care community.

The research reflects the collaborative efforts of INDICATE partners across Europe to strengthen AI literacy, promote responsible data use and support healthcare professionals in navigating the evolving digital healthcare landscape.

The next step is to build on these pilot insights to further develop and evaluate educational activities that help translate AI knowledge into clinical practice.
