INDICATE and Flower Labs formalise collaboration to advance federated AI in European healthcare

The INDICATE project has signed an agreement with Flower Labs, marking an important milestone in the development of its European federated data infrastructure for intensive care research.

The collaboration brings together INDICATE’s ambition to enable secure, cross-border health data research and Flower Labs’ expertise in federated artificial intelligence (AI). Together, they will support the implementation of federated learning technology within the INDICATE infrastructure, enabling researchers to develop and train AI models across participating hospitals while keeping sensitive patient data securely within their own institutions.

The agreement builds on the collaboration highlighted during the INDICATE Consortium Meeting in Rome, held from 14–16 September 2026. During the meeting, Dr. Chong Shen Ng from Flower Labs introduced the Flower framework and demonstrated how federated learning enables collaborative AI development without the need to centralise patient data.

This approach reflects one of INDICATE’s guiding principles: “Data stays. Insights travel.”

By formalising this collaboration, INDICATE takes another important step from infrastructure design towards practical implementation. The partnership will contribute to establishing a scalable and privacy-preserving environment for AI-driven research, supporting collaboration between intensive care units across Europe.

Looking ahead
The next phase will focus on further implementing federated learning capabilities within the INDICATE platform and supporting the development of AI models across participating healthcare institutions.

This agreement represents an important step towards INDICATE’s long-term vision: building a sustainable European infrastructure that enables responsible health data use, strengthens international research collaboration and ultimately contributes to improving patient care.
